 Emory Park Houses is a 27-unit missing middle housing development on a two-acre site in West Dallas. 


The project seeks to balance density and scale while responding to adjacent building fabric of historic houses and
recent housing developments.


The houses are arranged in four rows across the site, each
house footprint is shifted on its lot so that the spaces of neighboring side
yards are clustered and woven throughout the development to punctuate the
streetscape. Acknowledging the pedestrian scale of the surrounding
neighborhood, all the perimeter houses are oriented outward with generous entry
porches.


The exterior design reinterprets familiar residential details such as
gabled roofs, clapboard siding and window awnings. Lifted above the street on
the second floor, the living space of each house features an open plan and
cathedral ceiling that is daylit by a unique picture window placement.

Salvage Swings utilizes scrap cross-laminated timber panels to create a fun and inviting summer pavilion. The pavilion consists of 12 repetitive modules that frame
individual swings and views of the park and surrounding city. The swings are
organized collectively in a triangular form to create a new communal space
within the park. 


The open framework of
the pavilion can host a variety of activities including community swinging,
picnicking, outdoor concerts, and hide-and-seek games. The swing seats come
from the window cut-outs between modules and activate a large-scale peg game
for kids. Integrated lighting in the swing windows transforms the pavilion
at night into a beacon from the banks of the East River in Manhattan and
Queens. 


Following the summer events, individual swing modules from the pavilion can be redistributed in new places and configurations.

The Nicolett 


is a restaurant in downtown Lubbock, Texas
that infuses High Plains history and culture with elevated French cuisine. This
adaptive reuse project inserts a dining room, bar, and kitchen into an existing
one-story terracotta masonry storefront building.


The interior design focuses on a few strategic modifications including a slatted wood screen, an
open kitchen design and a new entrance. A material palette of wood and metal is
applied in layers to highlight the richness of the existing terracotta walls,
wood ceilings and stone fireplace. The focal point of the project is a modern open kitchen framed by a quarter-arched ceiling
transition that clearly delineates old from new and dining from production
spaces. The redesigned entry sequence welcomes guests into the heart of the
dining room after passing through desert-landscaped courtyards and quirky
outbuildings.

Reddy Vineyards is a tasting room for a West Texas wine label located in Stonewall, TX. The project is sited in a former volunteer fire station which included a one story concrete block building and outdoor area with mature live oaks. The project draws on prominence of the vineyard’s red dirt and earth-tone branding to inform the colors and patterns of the new space. 


The exterior design included a new steel frame and wood clad screen that strikes a datum across the front elevation and frames a path into the primary outdoor seating area and entry. An interior strategy of openings and thickening of the existing walls allowed for minimal structural modification while fully reconfiguring the interior layout 


to create visual connections between the bar, retail space and main tasting room.  Shelving throughout the space highlights the catalog of wine offerings, and a feature wall creates a playful pattern of texture and light with back-lit abstracted shapes.

Ground Rules floats an elevated playing court and seating
under the concrete colonnade of the Cummins Corporate Office Building designed
by Roche Dinkeloo. The project responds to the monumental existing structure
and its systematic deployment across the site by inserting an architectural
folly within the gridded structure that creates a spontaneous gathering space
for office workers and downtown pedestrians alike. In juxtaposition to the weighty permanence of the
concrete structure, this new boardwalk is lightweight and temporary in its
materiality, primarily constructed from discarded lumber salvaged from
construction sites. Additionally, the project is designed in modules so that Ground Rules can
be disassembled, relocated and reconfigured after the exhibition to continue
the conversation and games in new places.

Mix
and Match prototypes a design and fabrication process
for utilizing waste lumber leftover from building construction. Over 90% of
single-family houses in the United States are wood-framed, and this project
seeks to find alternative uses for the spent facilitator lumber, including lumber for
shoring and concrete formwork, that accompanies this economical construction technique. Mix and Match turns this waste lumber into a gridded wall system that can be reconfigured into various
spatial arrangements. The
wood for this project was salvaged from our Emory Park housing development in Dallas, Texas.&#38;nbsp;

Our Story Starts With a Tear is a mixed media installation and performance created by the visual artist Danielle Hatch. As Hatch writes: “Through the format of a participatory nine-course meal, the performance will encompass aspects of ritual, play and emotional exchange. Thematically, the work will explore both the geography of motherhood and mothering as survival, examining the mother/infant relationship through the lens of the work of psychoanalyst and pediatrician DW Winnicott.” Somewhere Studio collaborated with the artist to design the temporary stage platform, five armatures, and the valance hanging system. The stage and cake stands were fabricated using recycled wood, furniture and found objects.

Wildlife Scramble is an interactive public art piece sited on the Nestawaya recreational skating trail. The project celebrates the diversity of flora and fauna in Manitoba through an interactive series of custom illustrated 360-degree rotating blocks. Skaters at the Forks are be filled with joy, warmth and laughter as they explore unique and playful combinations of creatures wearing toques, sweaters, and skates in various habitats. Bench seats and framed openings offer a place to rest and adorable spots to take memorable photos of loved ones. 

The blocks are constructed out of salvaged wood frame with aluminum printed faces that include 170 unique graphics illustrated by the artist team at Studio Blinky.

The Commons at Spring Creek is a 58-unit missing middle townhouse development in Richardson, Texas that seeks to establish a dynamic urban context and walkable streetscape on a site isolated by large-scale infrastructure. Located on the DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) commuter rail next to the Cityline/Bush Station. The western edge of the site is bounded by Red Moon Way and the Spring Creek Park Trail that leads to a larger park space south of the site. 


The townhouses are assembled in eleven buildings that follow the perimeter of the site offering a central gathering space and a dog park for residents and the city. &#38;nbsp;The buildings along Red Moon Way are designed with generous entry porches to connect to the sidewalk, large windows to bring in natural light and shifts in the building massing in both plan and section to break up the large facades. Black offset panels accent the window openings further breaking down the facade and the repetitive nature of the units, and alternate raised brick coursing add detail and shadow play to the base of the building.&#38;nbsp;

The Shelter Project is a new bus stop for the Wells Goodfellow neighborhood of St. Louis designed in collaboration with local
non-profit community building organizations, including the Wellston Loop CDC and the Saint Louis Story Stitchers, and Metro St. Louis.


The shelter design combines the necessary shade and
seating elements of a bus stop with a cell-phone charging station, community
bulletin board, and pantry to distribute common household goods to those in
need. The roof design includes a water collection system to capture rainwater
for the adjacent garden and a solar panel to power the charging station and
lights.
